Our Cat Family
The story... continues

SO , enter Shaggy,
Blackfoot, Bug
and Guido....

shaggy

The three striped kittens looked a lot a like when they first showed up in Spring of 2005..
One was Shaggier than the others = Shaggy
and one had Black feet = Blackfoot (Duh..)
Bug got her name cause she used to go outside and bring bugs in to play with... (oh joy)
And Guido got his name when one day I was eating spaghetti and left the room for a couple minutes,
came back and he had eaten over half of it! He must be Italian!

Shaggy is the biggest cat.. not fat, but BIG!
He is also very silly! He likes playing tag and is good at making people smile.

Blackfoot is a sweetheart. ... Most of the time.
She is the bravest of all our cats. The others run when the vacuum comes out or when guests come over., but Blackfoot likes being around the action., although she might drink a little too much beer...

Guido is very silly too and likes lots of attention He doesn't know there is a hierarchy of cats here. He ignores any who growl... not because he is boss (not even close) but because he thinks all cats are created equal...
Guido sits on our deck and waits for us to come him. He'll start meowing as soon as he knows its us....
It's nice to be loved.....

Bug still likes chasing bugs, when given the chance... She also likes playing catch with Balls... She loves a good massage (don't we all) and enjoys hiding, then Jumping out at us in surprise....

Munchie Boy, Munchie Girl and Steve weren't thrilled about having more cats around. When the kittens got bigger, Blackfoot, Bug, and Shaggy decided they would all pick on poor Munchie girl. Anytime Munchie Girl goes from one room to the next one of these three, or all three chase her across the floor. (Munchie Girl is the smallest)
Steve chases Munchie Boy, so Munchie Boy would rather have the kittens around then Steve...

Steve still thinks he is the top cat, but if Shaggy wanted to, he could prove Steve wrong....

That is Munchie Boy and a young Guido watching a pig outside...

We had a great place with a yard away from all traffic, for almost a year and half, then decided to move closer to the beach The only place we could afford (if you call it that) was a small condo in town! There was no way we would let them outside there...The kittens were young enough to not really notice the change... And we knew Munchie Boy would be happy to be away from Larry. Steve we worried about the most, but I think he is the one that actually likes it the best!

We screened in the porch, added places for them to lounge, and covered the steps of a ladder with carpet and put that out there for them too.

We put some carpeted Palm Trees in the living room for them to climb.

We also built shelves all around the top of the master bedroom, and carpeted those too.

We think the cats are happy...
at least most of the time...
Blackfoot

So 2005 passed into 2006....
We moved our office to a new location....
which already came with cats....

As many places, the people who were here before us liked having cats around, but never got the cats fixed! A lot of people don't think (or care) about what happens over time, or what burden it puts on others, or how these animals can survive safe and happy! Others just let their pets run outside, while not being spayed or nuetered, and even worse, people abandon pregnant cats, or cats they cant care for anymore, or dont want anymore, so what happens?? Besides being forced to live and survive on their own, ... when unfixed, these cats have more cats, and those cats have more cats... and it can escalate... These community cats go hungry, get sick, get injured... and have no one to look after them.
Thousands upon thousands of community cats are killed by local cities, and "humane societies" every year
Our society needs to change how we can so easily take the life from a healthy animal! We need to stop allowing cats, and dogs to breed until there are no "pets" being killed at the shelters because there isnt enough room, or enough places for them to live. We need to educate people on caring about animals, what is good and right. Taking care of animals needs inteligence, and compassion! We need to stop all abandonment of animals. Throwing away an animal, as if it is last years clothes.

We of course started off by feeding all the animals around ... We, too wanted to get all of them spayed and nuetured which can be spendy... John, a nice guy who had been feeding the cats there told us about the feline foundation which helps get feral cats fixed. They work from donations and get discounted surgerys for feral cats with certain vets. We got involved with that program and 2006 are taking care of for a colony of nearly 50 cats!
(SIDE NOTE: Feline foundation closed its doors around 2010 but the Maui Humane society started helping people get community cats fixed there) For more on our office colony click here.

We would love to take all the cats home with us, (and still hope to have property somewhere, someday, that lets us do just that....) But it is nice to have two "homes" with great cats that welcome us and make us smile....

We have had a few cats that needed special treatment, and a couple that we needed to bring home for awhile to nurse back to health...

AND a couple that stayed....
